I think it's always good to look back at my past work to see how I've grown. So, at the beginning of every month I clean out last year's work of the same month. Low and behold, I discovered that I began posting to this gallery on July 4, 2007. Happy Anniversary to me. I still like many of the photos that I did in the past, although the technical quality leaves something to be desired. Hopefully, I will be saying the same thing at my next anniversary...hopefully showing more growth.

Onward and upward.

The lake gets choppy towards evening. So, I used a long shutter opening to get the misty, dreamy effect of the water lapping around the rocks. I think this is my favorite photo from the weekend at Zephyr Point, NV, Christian Camp.

My husband and I discovered this winery on one of our weekend outings. It's an old dairy farm converted (sort of) into a winery. This was the tasting room that had been a blacksmith shop in another day and age. I liked the light coming through the window and the view of the old cow barn out the door.

Coufos Cellars, Rough and Ready, CA

(Yes, the name of the town is Rough and Ready...remember, I live in the wild, wild west.)

I turned in my first 4 photos for my "Portraits Unplugged" class taught by Bobby Lane. Of course, it's all about the light and the mood you want to create that makes or breaks a photo. So, in the first lesson, we learn to find the light (natural) to create the effect that we want. Here, my ever gracious and patient husband poses for me while I try to find the "Rembrandt" lighting effect. It's called Rembrandt lighting because it's the light that Rembrandt most frequently used in his portraits and gives the subject (or in my case, "victim") a noble, regal or thoughtful look. I was looking at a Martin Luther King portrait today where the photographer used the same lighting technique (http://www.compendius.com/images/martin_luther_king_jr.JPG)

At any rate, I'm thoroughly enjoying this online class and hope to learn lots more about natural light portraits and how to get the look I want. (No wonder my family and friends frequently hide from me.)

I thought I would get some great shots of the fall colors in the American River Canyon this morning because it was raining. But, as you can see in the reflection, the clouds began to break up by the time I got up there. I'm not really happy with any of my photos because I had to stand around and wait for the sun to go behind fewer and fewer clouds, but I do like the blue reflection in this photo.

Yesterday I went out hunting for photo ops and since I live in a rural area, they are usually fairly easy to find. I found a really neat old bench on a really rural road, by accident. I took a couple of shots but then a resident spied me and started heading my way, waving his hands and yelling at me. Even though the bench was on public property and I was on public property...people out here have guns and this area is known for many things...including meth labs and growing marijuana. Maybe the guy wanted to hire me for his daughter's wedding...but I doubt it. I didn't wait around to find out.

Later I saw these two old beauties...and friendlier people who cheerily waved to me as I was photographing the trucks.

I was over in Camino at Larsen Apples prowling around looking for some photos to meet the requirements of one of my photo classes and I saw these Red Hot Pokers against this yellow corrugated steel building. This photo doesn't qualify for my class, but I thought it was an interesting scene.

Yesterday my camera club (El Dorado Camera Club) met at the Cosumnes River Preserve in the Sacramento delta area near Galt, CA. I discovered that I am not really equipped to photograph wildlife because I really need a lens that is longer than 150mm. But, my husband and I enjoyed the 3 mile walk in the 46,000 acre preserve area. We were there from about 3:00 to sunset, so I did get some nice landscape and sunset shots. I also saw some pheasants, egrets and cranes...but, sadly no photos.

I wanted to remember Pearl Harbor Day with an appropriate photo, but I don't live in Hawaii and I live quite a ways from the ocean. But, as I was driving into my driveway, I looked down the road and I saw that the clouds were clearing and the sun had come out. It was a hopeful sign. Even in the darkest hours, there is always hope. God bless those that serve to protect and defend this country.
